Until the 19th century, a handkerchief was actually a "trousers pocket".
Some people believe that the pocket square, also called handkerchief, in one form or another can trace its origins back to ancient Egypt, where small linen cloths were used as an example of wealth. Small pieces of coloured cloth don’t necessarily translate directly into what we would consider a modern pocket square, but it is also true that that was the very first time a piece of cloth was used for a purely decorative purpose.
Starting in the 15th century, the handkerchief became popular throughout Europe and started to come in different and more exotic materials like silk. At this point they still came in many shapes and sizes this only changed with Louis XVI - King of France in late 1700s. His wife Antoinette seemed to be a little unsatisfied with the sizes of some handkerchieves at the time so she convinced her husband to only use square pockets measuring 16 x 16. The pocket square was born.
In the 19th century the pocket square finally made his transition from trousers to breast pocket as we know it today. The idea was to prevent the pocket square to become dirty as it usually would come into contact with coins and other things kept in trousers pockets. Today, the pocket square is has only a decorative function and is sadly often missed in a Gentleman's breast pocket.
